South Africa Holiday: Karoo National Park

Karoo National Park in the Western Cape is dominated by the lofty Nuweveld Mountains and rolling plains. In late afternoon the great unyielding canopy slowly softens its fierceness, and from pastel shades of pink and blue, the colours deepen.

Karoo National Park occupies a small of the Great Karoo's vast and unforgiving landscape. Being the largest ecosystem in South Africa, the Karoo is home to a fascinating diversity of life, all having adapted to survive in these harsh conditions.
A scenic drive along the picturesque Klipspringer Pass is a must, with its environmentally sympathetic style of construction and scenic viewpoint at Rooivalle making this a unique experience.
The park has a wide variety of endemic wildlife. Many species have been brought back to their former ranges - such as black rhino and Cape buffalo, as well as Cape mountain zebra.
There are over 20 breeding pairs of black eagle within the park, making the park one of the highest densities of this regal species in Africa.

The park boasts a variety of excellent Cape Dutch-style accommodation. We recommend a day visit with an overnight stay (click on the map opposite to visit SANParks website).
