The high altitude of Tshwane (Pretoria) and the
Highveld ensures a favourable climate throughout the
year.
Summer days (October to March) are pleasantly
hot, though rarely to the point of discomfort, and
evenings are comfortably cool.

This is a summer-rainfall region and between
November and February summer thunderstorms produce
flashes of lightning and torrential but brief
afternoon downpours (and occasional hail).
There are about six weeks of chill in mid-winter
(July & August). The days are warm, occasionally up
to 23°C, but the evenings are chilly with frequent
frosts at night.

Johannesburg's climate is similar to
that of Tshwane (Pretoria), but it lies at a
slightly higher altitude than its northern
neighbour and its air temperatures are, on
average, about two degrees lower.
Possibly the best time to visit is
spring when more than 70,000 Jacaranda Trees
are in full bloom. During October, the whole
town is one big purple-coloured,
sweet-smelling sea of blossoms. These exotic
trees; imported from South America some 100
years ago, gave the city its nickname,
"Jacaranda City".
